20 Verses You Need to Read For Worry

Most all of us have been given more free time than we know what to do with.  We spend our days scrolling social media, reading books and finding new ways to not go absolutely crazy (though, let’s be honest, some of us already are!).  Though we have the temptation to view the times we are now going through as wasted time, let’s use the time we are given to BE STILL (a phrase that has a whole new meaning now). Find rest in who God is and His faithfulness.  Let’s take advantage of the opportunity we’ve been given to pause, and soak in the truth of God and His Word.

Last Wednesday, I posted a piece I wrote about how to deal with anxiety during Corona (link *here*).  I compiled a list of verses to meditate on when I find myself a little more anxious or worried than I ought to be.  Trust God, and cling to Him. Know that He is God, and He is GOOD.

My favorite of the list that you are about to read is coming from Psalm 33:20-22.  It’s one I recently found, and I now find myself looking at constantly.  It says:

“Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His holy name.  Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” Psalm 33:20-22

Find rest in these verses-

When you’re afraid or worried:

  1. “The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6-7
  2. “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities- all things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16-17
  3. “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
  4. “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; You stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.” Psalm 138:7
  5. “Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34
  6. “Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
  7. Do not be afraid.  Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today… The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14
  8. “But Joseph said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid.  Am I in the place of God?  You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.  So then, don’t be afraid.  I will provide for you and your children.’” Genesis 50:20-21
  9. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.  He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior- from violent people you save me.” 2 Samuel 22:2-3

When you need to alter your thoughts:

10. “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me- practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9

11. “When my spirit faints within me, You know my way!” Psalm 142:3

12. “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.  You hem me in behind and before and lay your hand on me.  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is too high; I cannot attain it.” Psalm 139:4-6

13. “As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s Word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.” 2 Samuel 22:31

When you’re seeking the Lord:

14. “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” Proverbs 8:17

15. “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”  Psalm 9:10

16. “We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  In Him our hearts rejoice for we trust in His holy name.  May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Psalm 33:20-22

When you want to reflect on the goodness of God in your worry:

17. “But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.  Therefore, you did not desert them, even when they cast themselves an image of a calf….” Nehemiah 9:17-18.

18. “You have kept your promises because you are righteous.” Nehemiah 9:8

19. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Hebrews 13:8

20. “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.  For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His holy name.  Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” Psalm 33:20-22
